Saturday, April 29, 2006

PAYPAL, a global leader in online payment accounts solutions, is set to establish its regional operating headquarters in the Philippines that will manage business process outsourcing (BPO) in the country.

Maria Roseni Mendoza-Alvero, the Philippine special trade representative of the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Silicon Valley (PTIC-Silicon Valley), said Paypal Asia Services Ltd. will operate general administration and planning, business planning and coordination, data processing and development and customer service that will also include call-center operations.

Mendoza-Alvero said the company is now finalizing registration procedures with the Board of Investments to initially invest $200,000 for its project.

Currently, these services are being done in the Philippines by some 600 personnel through registered outsource providers.

“More than just operating an auction site in the Philippines, the government encouraged eBay and its affiliated companies, including PayPal, to consider the Philippines as an e-services, logistics and distribution hub for its Southeast Asian operations,” she said.

An eBay company, PayPal is available in 56 countries and regions and is widely used by more than 86 million buyers and sellers on eBay to send and receive online payments through systems provided by financial institutions.

In the Philippines it is estimated that 112,000 people are now working in call centers, bringing in $1.12 billion in revenues this year, a tremendous increase from 2000 when call centers employed 2,400 people and earned $24 million.
