TELECOMMUNICATIONS and Internet service provider Multi-Media Telephone Inc. (MTI) wants to give its subscribers voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service at competitive rates.

"As part of our on-going network expansion, we intend to offer VoIP services to our subscribers in our various LEC [local exchange carrier]areas with the end view of reducing market rates," said MTI head for corporate services Juan Lorenzo Tañada.

The company, founded by the son of House Speaker Jose de Venecia, is licensed to operate an Internet protocol (IP) access node and offer LEC facilities in Metro Manila and several provinces.

The company needs secure VoIP access numbers from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to fulfill its plan.

"Since we expect heavy demand for this VoIP offering, may we therefore request the Commission for the allocation and assignment to MTI VoIP prefix numbers, equivalent to 100,000 subscriber numbers," Tañada wrote the NTC.

MTI, the operations unit of Broadband Philippines, already offers voice exchange in all of its 'wired' buildings where the tenants can access VoIP service.

Voice Exchange is the company's next generation service that goes through an IP based network. Voice exchange services include local and international direct dial (IDD) calls that carry high-grade voice quality.

The company has partnered with Callahan Associates International to bring the technology here in the country. MTI has a dedicated bandwidth towards an international VoIP gateway facility in the US

MTI originally engaged in paging network and call center operations before it shifted to local exchange telephone business.

The company's network consists of wireless transmitters for high-speed data and voice access, virtual private networks, web-hosting, Internet data centers and e-business applications.

MTI provides LEC and broadband facilities via its local multipoint distribution network system. It operates in 67 sites in Metro Manila, servicing hundreds of corporate clients.

In 2005, MTI made significant investments in the code division multiple access 2000 technology.

This technology, the company said, allows for the convergence of broadband and voice service. MTI claims it is ahead of existing industry players as others are still in the process of expanding their bandwidth.

MTI is competing for the remaining third-generation license not yet awarded by the NTC.

Thailand's Loxley Public Co., Ltd. of Thailand is MTI's partner. The company has a capitalization of P1.463 billion. Its debt-to-equity ratio is 63:37 as of December 31, 2005.
