MULTI-MEDIA Telephony Inc. (MTI), the operating unit of Broadband Philippines, is about to conclude negotiations for an interconnection with Globe Telecom and is seen to implement soon a similar agreement with Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT).

MTI told the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) that it is currently in talks also with other phone firms to more fully implement its public mobile-telephone service (PMTS).

It asked the NTC to extend its provisional authority (PA) to install, operate and maintain a nationwide PMTS so that it could continue to roll out its network. MTI's PA expired yesterday. However, it could still continue its roll out pending approval of a petition to extend its permit.

The company expects to sign up 20,000 mobile-phone subscribers in the first year of its operation, but MTI chief for corporate services Juan Lorenzo Tañada said this may not be realized if there will be no additional bandwidth.

"During our ongoing testing of our PMTS system, we found out that we will have great difficulty accommodating our projected 20,000 subscribers for Year 1 considering that our LEC (local exchange carrier), nationwide broadband and nationwide Internet networks likewise utilize the same assigned frequency allocation," Tañada said.

This difficulty, he added, will even be more compounded come the second year of operation onwards.

Its application for additional frequencies in the 1900 Megahertz (MHz) spectrum, which will be used for its PMTS, has been pending since April last year.

Specifically, MTI wants the 1900.625 to 1909.373 MHz and 1980.625 to 1989.375 MHz bandwidths. The frequencies will be used to service subscribers in Regions 1 to 9, said Tañada.

The company has already made significant investments in the highly advanced Code division multiple access (CDMA) 2000 technology to complement its broadband services.

CDMA 2000 allows the company to converge its broadband and voice service. It is the platform used for its PMTS network.

The company's network is now made up of wireless transmitters capable of providing high-speed data and voice access, virtual private networks, web-hosting, Internet data centers and e-business applications.
