MANILA -- Strong demand for open source-based business intelligence by major Filipino corporations, particularly in the telecommunications business, is encouraging US database software provider Greenplum to build its business in the country.

The company recently partnered with Sun Microsystems Philippines to provide a major database system for mobile telecommunications provider Smart Communications, which is looking to cut down its subscriber accounts processing.

While Sun Microsystems provided the servers, Greenplum provided a set of applications on enterprise data warehousing. Under this exclusive partnership, Greenplum would fully utilize the features of Sun Microsystems' Solaris 10 operating system, as well as its Sun Fire X4500 data server, codenamed "Thumper."

In a presentation, Greenplum Asia Pacific General Manager Vinay Samuel said their applications, nearly all running on Linux, Unix and OSX, are turnkey applications that boost data warehousing processes by more than five times the speed of other methods. This is because of their application's parallel computing capabilities that improve the overall processing of heavy transactions.

Samuel said that the Philippines could grow its data warehousing and business intelligence requirements, given the presence of large retail, manufacturing and financial businesses.

"Smart Communications is just the first and we'll be getting more companies in the coming years," Samuel said.
